Memories of cold and wet winter track sessions evaporated in the sunlight of yesterday evening’s track session. The sun was out, the temperature was warm but not too warm and the athletics track was a hive of activity. Sprinters doing their drills, a lone high jumper methodically repeating his jumps under the watchful eye of his coach, javelin throwers, discus and shot-put – all go!

The Session

I arrived a little later than I had planned but still had enough time to run a 1.5k warm up on the track. Then, to the main part of the evening – circuit repeats. The coach informed us that we’d be running 400m, 800m, 400m, 800m, 800m twice which sounded good to me although having run hard for four days in a row, I resolved to be good and run each lap at a fast but consistently comfortable pace. This is around the 1:20 mark.

I was very tempted to do my usual ‘fast as I can’ on one of the 400m repeats but with another two 800s still to go I just did it a little faster than the others in 1:04.

Then a 1200 metre warm down followed by stretching – important after a speed session.
